• Peter Wiggins, UK Pro Video Editor

When I was in the UK late last year and I saw this clip from Apple UK that I thought our members would enjoy.

Peter is a friend of DCFCPUG as he is the brains behind Idustrial Revolution’s plugins…. His claim to fame is his skills as a MASTER FCP EDITOR.  He’s very well-known in the UK as an editor of sporting video. It easy to see that Peter has a passion for the edit and a penchant for sports in general as you will find his work at the snooker table, Tour de France and yatchting events to name a few.  Peter has a strong eye for the art of storytelling and invoking emotion from his work. In this MEET THE EDITOR, Apple UK discussion, he shares tidbits about working with sport footage on a tight deadlines, editing to audio, and so on. It’s a very interesting video and interview that we can all learn something from and apply in the edit bay.

So without further delay, enjoy Peter talking about his editing of the Tour de France and his workflows over time.

    Cheers!

    Awesome job, Peter…

    Watch it here !

    Enjoy!

  • DCFCPUG Leader selected for Digital BuZZ production team

The Digital Production BuZZ, the official podcaster for the NAB 2010 show in Las Vegas, NV offer me a role on their production team for this year’s NAB show event.  The show is from 10-15 April and features a full radio production booth on the show floor for the duration of the NAB show.

Keynote speakers, members of the NAB team, vendors and show attendees will be interview and produced in near real-time. It’s going to be a busy week but will give me additional exposure and the ability for me to talk about DCFCPUG!

One of the benefits is that we get a FULL SHOW PASS for contributions to the team production of the show. Any DCFCPUG members going to NAB this year?  Look for us on the show floor and join us for the planned SUPERMEET as well. There are special considerations made for FCPUG members, ask me for more info!

  • MEDIA MOVING AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT: GV EXPO 2009

Here are some thoughts from the recent GVExpo from our member, Paula Toviessi:

I recently had the pleasure of spending a few days with Larry Jordon at the GV Expo 2009. Larry Jordan is a producer, director, editor, consultant, and trainer with over 25 years of experience in video production and post-production. Larry and Creative Planet’s Digital Buzz were the official podcast of the GV Expo 2009 and conducted several interviews throughout the expo.
I had a blast working with Larry who is very knowledgeable about video production in all phases of the production. During the expo, Larry’s interviews touched on training, Blu-ray Discs, archiving media, Panasonic’s new 3D technology, interactive white boards, PowerPoint/video/web integration, and video streaming. All of the interviews can be heard at the following site:

While at the expo, I also had the great opportunity to listen in on a panel lead by Bruce Nazarian, president of the International Digital Media Alliance about the future of Blu-ray Discs. During the discussion, panelists debunked myths about the use of Blu-ray Discs, how to use blu-ray Discs with Final Cut Pro and the future of Blu-ray Discs for all producers. My GV Expo 2009 experience was fascinating and I gained so much knowledge about all facets of video production and the industry. Please make sure you visit the Creative Planet’s Digital Buzz at http://www.digitalproductionbuzz.com/ and listen in to Larry Jordan on Thursday evenings. I look forward to the 2010 GV Expo and hope you all can make it.

  • Meeting with Clayton LeBouef – Playwright, Actor and Producer

Just a heads up, I’ve started a dialog with an actor and one of our DCFCPUG members on a project that the extended DCFCPUG community may want to contribute to as it develops/matures into it’s final products (feature film, play, documentary and webisodic series on the Internet).

He invited me to his home on Saturday in Washington DC and we discussed the project(s). Check Clayton’s pedigree on IMBD. As a veteran of the stage and film, he has what it takes to succeed in the entertainment business.  Given the concepts for the next project, it very well could be the next PRECIOUS.

Stay tuned for more as things develop….

The latest iteration of the Final Cut Pro User Group SuperMeet is coming up, this time in Amsterdam. Event organizers Michael Horton and Dan Berube can’t help but display their enthusiasm for both the event and for their mission of bringing the power of digital storytelling to the world. They discuss some of the new features of this SuperMeet, such as turning part of the event over to the audience, the newest edition of their SuperMag and the expansion of the Final Cut Pro user group community. Their plans for the future, why it is so important to them, and why they refuse to make the SuperMeets “dog and pony shows” are all part of a look at one of the fastest-growing conference series going.

    Walter Murch SuperMeet London 2009
Watch Walter’s talk – Click here!

At the FCPUG Supermeet in London, June 25th 2009, Walter takes to the stage to talk about Tetro, the latest film written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The conversation extends to other work Murch has done and reveals the heart of modern day filmmaking using Final Cut Pro as the editor. Walter has won three Academy Awards: best sound for Apocalypse Now (1979) and a double Oscar, best sound and best picture editing, for the English Patient (1996). He has been nominated for Academy Awards on six other occasions.

Walter Murch’s career began in the 1960′s when he was editing and mixing sound with Francis Ford Coppola’s The Rain People (1969). Subsequently, he worked on George Lucas’s THX 1138, American Graffiti and Coppola’s The Godfather before editing picture and mixing sound on Coppola’s The Conversation, for which he received an Academy Award nomination in sound. Murch also mixed the sound for Coppola’s The Godfather Part II which was released in 1974, the same year as The Conversation. In 1985 he directed his one film, Return to Oz, which he co-wrote with Gill Dennis.

Other credits include: Julia (1977), Apocalypse Now (1979), Ghost (1990), The Godfather, Part III (1990), The English Patient (1996), Jarhead (2005), and most recently Youth Without Youth (2007).

Walter has won three Academy Awards: best sound for Apocalypse Now (1979) and a double Oscar, best sound and best picture editing, for the English Patient (1996). He has been nominated for Academy Awards on six other occasions.

Murch has earned a reputation as being innovative and daring with his approach to technology. He used Final Cut Pro to edit Cold Mountain in 2003, at a time when Final Cut Pro still had to prove itself suitable for feature film production.
