Oh, what’s this, Canon? You want your turn in the spotlight as well? Well, we suppose a hint of an announcement is better than a non-announcement, so bring it on! The imaging company just sent us word of a presumably star-studded SoCal event on November 3rd, giving its cameras a chance to walk the red carpet in a rather surprising Hollywood role reversal. We’re not sure exactly what Canon plans to unveil that night — a new mirrorless camera, or perhaps some fancy pants camcorder, destined for Hollywood’s elite? But assuming the company isn’t crying wolf, we’ll be there with a live report from the red carpet.

UPDATE: http://dcfcpug0323.eventbrite.com/
We have Jad Meouchy from Los Angeles in town during our event THIS WEDNESDAY at RHED PIXEL!
He will be bringing a pair of DSLRs for the networking period before the main event and afterwards. Both a Canon 5D and t2i have been upgraded with aftermarket firmware (Magic Lantern) for enhanced features.
Here is your chance to ask detailed questions and get a better understanding as to what your camera REALLY is capable of doing with none of the risks!

Tutorial on how to use picture styles to increase the dynamic range of the Canon 7D / 5DMkII.
Custom picture styles are an amazing feature that almost compensate for the lack of a raw codec for video capture on the Canon DSLRS. The default picture styles on the camera are geard towards producing nice results out of the box but are not very good if you intend to do color correction and grading in postprocessing. This tutorial shows how to use custom picture styles that produce very flat, high dynamic range footage (similar to real film cameras).
The actual picture styles have been made by other people, and here are some references:
Super Flat, Genesis Panalog and Velvia
Marvel’s Cine Style
If you have problems downloading them, you can get them from here in one package (crnkovic.org/?video/?picture_styles.zip). I do however recommend that you get them from the original sources and read the forum posts/blog posts associated with them. The final example footage was shot handheld (Zacuto rapid fire + zfinder) at Skogskyrkogården cemetery in Stockholm. I scouted the place for a possible future shoot and the footage I shot was never meant for release – it did however come handy in this tutorial as it was all shot using the super flat picture style.

Another interesting story from F-Stoppers:
So here’s the story; Patrick and I had the idea for FStoppers and we knew that we had to create a bunch of videos to get others excited about creating their own. We had some free time and some money in the bank after a solid wedding season so we decided to go to Vegas. We did not do a good enough job planning anything. We had some ideas but we never really set anything in stone so by the time we got to Vegas we had a couple of models lined up but nothing else. We only brought 3 cameras, 3 lenses, and 3 flashes, and the flycam.
One night we go out with one of our model friends (Tatiana) in Vegas and she introduces us to some guys from NYC that happen to be staying in one of the most expensive rooms in all of Vegas. Long story short, these guys leave the next day but buy their room for one more night so that we can stay there and shoot in it the following day. Being able to stay and shoot in this amazing $15,000 per night room was the highlight of my trip.
Here is a behind the scenes view of the Vegas event….

The handle attaches to a quick release plate to which we occasionally mount a gyro stabilizer. This solution works very well and no longer requires the operator to touch the camera to trigger video recording. Instead, just a small thumb press and the camera blinks to life.
This was built specifically for a Canon T2i, but would also work with a 7D and 5Dmk2. Total parts cost about $10.
Enjoy,
