Final Cut Pro is a professional non-linear editing software application developed by Macromedia Inc. and then Apple Inc. Final Cut Pro 7 will only run on Mac personal computers running Mac OS X version 10.5.6 or later and using Intel processors. It is a module of the Final Cut Studio product. The software logs and captures video onto a hard drive (internal or external), where it can be edited and processed.

From the early 2000s, Final Cut Pro developed a large and expanding user base including many independent filmmakers. It has made inroads with film and television editors who have traditionally used Avid Technology's Media Composer. According to a 2007 SCRI study, Final Cut made up 49% of the US professional editing market, with Avid at 22%. A published Survey in 2008 by the American Cinema Editors Guild placed their users at 21% FCP (and growing from previous surveys of this group), while all others are still on an Avid system of some kind.

Hi. I just joined to get help with FCP7. Am I in the right place?
Right now at the very start of the project I put one jpg on the time line and it shows in the viewer as all rainbow pixelated. So my first question is "What's wrong with this picrue??" Literally, and pun intended. I can't really go any furtherr with the files distorted in the viewer.
Though I have a lot to learn about using FCP, and am excited about it, this is a not happy start.
Any help out there???
Feel free to call me too. I'll give you my ph # if you're willing to call.
thanks.

In case anyone is interested, the Marketing Communications office of U of Md College Park's Business School is hiring a full-time videographer/editor (more editor I think) on a renewable contract.

Here's the web address for the job ad.

https://jobs.umd.edu/applicants/jsp/shared/position/JobDetails_css.jsp?postingId=139457

I used to have this job, after a few years of increasing budget pressures they decided they really needed someone cheaper when contract renewal came around.

They're all friendly people and you'll get to work a lot with a former television producer who, while she wants lots of control over editing, really knows how to plan a shoot, interview, and write a solid script. Feels like semi-pro to pro corporate/agency video work.

Get your contract renewed for a year or two and you'll start to get health benefits even as a contract employee. You'll also get to work with a nice 8-core Mac Pro system with final cut suite 2 and adobe cs3 master suite that's technically really up to spec for whatever they need.

However, even if you can do everything they want in the job description well, I don't think you can make close to $25 an hour working there to start or anytime soon. And there will be a few days of mandatory unpaid leave around spring and winter break. They do give you generous amounts of paid vacation time though so that's kind of a wash.

Also, through much of spring and fall they (responding to outside pressure) may rush and overload you as they're mostly marketing folks who don't know how long some video things take to do. So you'll have to protect the time needed to finish your stuff on time while still keeping them happy.

It was an excellent first full-time video job for me, maybe it will be for one of you. They want a moderately fast and fairly skilled final cut editor who works well in a team of non-video marketing people under frequent pressure, and, this is important, they don't want to pay very much.

Shayne Weyker
reader23@hotmail.com

p.s. I'm available for freelance shooting/editing starting mid July. I have a Sony EX1 kit and Final Cut.
My recent work is on the web at http://tinyurl.com/example-videos

Stacecarter - Thank you so much for you reply. This is exactly why I joined in on DC FCP Forum. You really clarified some of my issues. I need to speak with someone in the real world that is working with AVCHD. The workflow issues that I was speaking of was based on my search over the internet, and as you can imagine, I read comments from all over the board. I was ready to move ahead with a purchase until I read some of the posts from people that were having problems. So that is where it went down hill from there.
Here is just one example that I read at this blog.

http://adamwelznxcam.wordpress.com/

His first comment: Log and transfer takes extraordinarily long to transcode long AVCHD clips. His list goes on.
I guess I read to much on the negative side of this issue.

Sony has just come out with its new HXR-NX5 NXCAM which is AVCHD and the Panasonic Ag-HMC150 has been a stand out for over a year. They are in my price range and have gotten great reviews. Opps there I go again reading the reviews.

So now I can refocus and look at this from your vantage point. So glad I joined this group.
Let me know which way you go with your XDCAM choice this summer.

Rick - what exactly are the workflow issues to which you refer? I've been using, amongst other cams, a Panasonic AG HMC70p with no problems at all. I know transcoding can seem a bit painful, but honestly, I just see this as part of the convenience trade-off (our shop can't afford an uncompressed shooting solution just yet - and this seemed a good tradeoff to get into HD beyond HDV). With Log and transfer as sophisticated as it has become, it feels just like a tape-based workflow without the hassle of tape.

We're doing a big overhaul to XDCam this summer, but this has been a great bridge for us. So... what exactly is the problem you're running in to?

Since AVCHD has workflow isuess with FCP 7 and all the restrictions it is not worth the cost to move up from tape. It would take some arm twisting to get me to consider AVCHD, ie; is Apple taking a second look at this. I have look for camcorders that use other codecs under $4000 and the only appealing model I have seen is the JVC GY-HM100U. It is a small compact package with some limitations, but it is a perfect match with FCP, fast workflow with MPEG-2 video and Quicktime format, no time consuming transcoding. It looks like the new Canon XF300 has got it right also with the MPEG-2, XF codec, but it is going to be in the $7000 range. I may wait this situation out and stay with tape until I see something better. For those committed to FCP I would like to hear how others are dealing with this issue as they consider a purchase of a tapeless HD camcorder.

Thanks, Rick

When using JKL, I often scan through footage at the fastest rate. I have two systems hooked to an Omneon server. On system is fine. The other one skips at about a half a second at a time while scanning with a jumpy result. It's very annoying. The other system plays each frame which creates a very smooth fast forward. Does anyone know why one would work fine and the other not? I am about to check the ram allocation to each (for Final Cut app) to see if that's the problem. Any other suggestions? Thanks much. I'm new to mac and Final Cut. I also edit with AVID DS and other AVID products.

I'm capturing footage from a v1u camera which I shot myself. The footage is either - quite muddy with lots of noise with no lines through it... or quite clear but with lines that break up when there is movement. I was not changing settings in the field -was white balancing often. It was shot in SD. Perhaps this is a v1u problem? Any thoughts.

Also - any suggestions for how to batch convert Flipcam clips to use in FCP timeline so there isn't a render issue every edit?

A quick google search on " mp3 jumpy" reveals...

Export the MP3 out to an AIF file and it will stop jumping. Its either the compression or the bit rate that causes the jumpiness.
FCP handles audio with the correct audio sample rate much better.
For example a CD is sampled at 44.1kHz, it needs to be sampled up.
The default sequence for DV in FCP has 48kHz audio.
You can use QuickTime Player Pro to open the MP3 then choose Export. Choose Sound to AIFF from the pop-up menu. Click Options and Choose None for the Compressor, 16Bit 48kHz Uncompressed Stereo.

Am I missing a setting in the audio/video preferences for FCP that allows me to capture DVCAM footage in 16:9 aspect via Firewire? It seems like the only settings I can get for standard def is 4:3 720x480, whereas I can capture HD in its proper 16:9 aspects. Is that the case or am I missing a means to make that adjustment for SD 16:9 capture in Firewire?

You probably have your sequence settings wrong. If you don't use a supported codec for RT, it will only show you two options. Go into your sequence, hit cmd-0 (zero) and make sure the Compressor Selection in the "Quicktime Video Settings" is selected as DV/DVCPRO - NTSC

Generally speaking you'll always find a deck to be more durable than a camera for capture purposes. All of the money that goes into a deck is going into the heads. While on a camera the heads are only a small portion of what your money's being spent on.

As for decks that will do both DV and HDV I have a Sony HVR-M15AU deck though I've never tried to use it with footage shot on a Canon camera. There's so many "flavors" to HDV that until I try something for myself I'm never confident that it will work.

I took training in analog video shooting and editing with VHS and three-quarter tape during my college days in the 1980's. I went to work with my family's construction business after I earned my BA at Pitt. Have been a life-long outdoor recreationist and volunteer in and around the Allegheny National Forest, currently upset by the oil drilling destruction to trails going on here. In Aug. of 2003, I attended Digital Media Academy at Stanford University to take a week-long immersion course in FCP from San Francisco-based filmmaker Dean Mermel. A year later, I was asked by the local tourism office to shoot an impromptu 30-second ad to be shown during a special fishing show to originate from here. Using nothing but my home setup (DV consumer cam) my 30 sec. spot made it onto the Outdoor Channel and it looked pretty good. In 2005, I completed my own homemade promotional DVD for a local winter festival. In '07, I shot and edited four political ads for a candidate for local office.

Jack-of-all-trades pretty much describes my work. I work in the office and I do labor on construction sites. I set our business up with our first Mac in August of '89 (SE), started doing bookkeeping and estimates, later donated DTP services for volunteer trails efforts, and eventually worked on video projects. So I've witnessed at least three "desktop revolution" events now.

In March of '09, I jumped at the opportunity to take a trip to DC to join Kitty Benzar of the Western Slope No Fee Coalition [ www.WesternSlopeNoFee.org ] to visit federal legislators' offices on Capitol Hill to discuss possible legislation to eliminate general-access fees on federal public lands; I spoke as a trails volunteer about my experiences on a national forest. While in DC, I looked up Washington Apple Pi as well as DCFCPUG's Rodney Mitchell. Rodney and I never met face-to-face, but we did have a nice phone chat one evening. I would love to return to the DC area, learn more about the local situation, and get some work. (Warren is on-the-ropes)

For years, I've been relying on a MiniDV (DV) camcorder for both shooting and log-and-capture into Final Cut Pro. My personal projects have been infrequent enough that I've been able to get away without wearing out the camcorder.

Now, I've thinking about one of these new HDV camcorders, maybe a Canon Vixia HV30 (they're coming down in price, I notice) and the thought occurred to me: are there any MiniDV decks available on the market that can handle tapes for both DV and HDV? Are there any good deals to be found? And what about the old tape-brand/lubricant issue? Do you still have to stick with one brand of tapes to avoid gumming up your deck? (I've been using Sony MiniDV tapes almost exclusively for years; using a head cleaner when necessary.)

How durable are these tape decks, anyway?

This bug first got introduced by Apple in version 1.0.3 and is not officially acknowledged yet. They know about it however. Affected imagery so far is everything above 8-Bit per channel in image sequences.

For us this means we won’t accept Apple Looks in the store until the issue is fixed. A rendering quality like this certainly is not what your money is worth. Instead of making your life harder with clunky workarounds like pre-swapping the colors so they fit in Apple Color we’ll just wait. Maybe Apple can fix it.

The screenshot (see link below) clearly shows how severe the issue at hand is.
Red and Blue channels trading places on greater than 8-Bit footage

Hi All - I just received this from a good friend and talented editor who contributed to Mr. Jordan's new book. here's the details AND a great discount. I'm putting my order in today and will be interested in reading any reviews y'all have once you get through it.

Cheers,
Stace

Peachpit Press has released a compilation of articles from the Edit
Well newsletter as a new book, entitled: Edit Well - Final Cut Studio
Techniques for the Pros. (I've attached a screen shot, below.)

As you may know, Peachpit is moving Edit Well from a newsletter to the
web, so this book gives us a nice way of celebrating over two years of
publishing. In compiling the book, we reviewed each of the 160
articles that we published and selected the 26 we felt were the best.

The book itself is gorgeous - 336 pages, full color screen shot. Very
pretty layout. We'd appreciate your help in getting the word out.

Peachpit describes the book this way: "Edit Well: Final Cut Studio
Techniques for the Pros" is the book that in-the-trenches editors have
been waiting for. It offers a holistic approach to using the tools in
Final Cut Studio for those who are responsible for a variety of tasks
just beyond straight editing.

Written by the preeminent experts and practicing professionals in
their fields, contributors include over 15 authors such as Larry
Jordan, Kevin Monahan, Mary Plummer, Mark Spencer, Tom Wolsky, and
Alexis Van Hurkman. Each chapter features insight on a particular tool
in the Studio, whether it be Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack Pro, Motion, or
Color. In addition, video tutorials and audio interviews of top Final
Cut Pro editors around the world are available for free on the
companion website.

Peachpit is offering a 35% discount to anyone buying the book from
Peachpit's website.

Here's the link to the book: www.peachpit.com/title/0321612183
