Paulette,
There is a FCP usergroup that helped others for all kinds of FCP
issues. Give them a shout. I’ve copied Rodney the main group leader
just in case he is familiar with the issue or knows someone who could
help.

I’m having a strange Final Cut Pro problem. 3 tapes – all will play in the
deck monitor. When I try to digitize – none appear in the preview monitor
of Final Cut – yet I see time code in the preview monitor.
I tried changing out firewire, decks, computers. no luck. Other tapes (not
shot on same camera) DO play and CAN be digitized. Changed the deck settings
to hdv, then back to dv. Still no luck
When I try to digitize straight from the camera – FC does not recognize the
camera. This is not my system. It seems like a tape issue? Camera settings?
Any thoughts? the tapes were shot on a sony v1u.
Thanks for your feedback.

Paulette:
I’m assuming this configuration worked sometime in the past…
Can you specify what is recorded on the tapes that DO and DON’T work?
Can you specify what settings your camera is in when connected via firewire to your computer?
Can you specify what your output selections are from your DECK to your computer?
What are your FCP capture settings
From what I can gather on the Net, the camera specs are as follows:
Model: HVR-V1U
3CMOS 1080p HDV camcorder
http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/product-HVRV1U/
1080p camera capable of the following rates processed from 1920 x 1080 at 60p in full 4:2:2 color space:
1080 progressive, 24fps –2:3 pull down is added and recorded to the 60i HDV tape
1080 progressive, 30fps–2:3 pull down is added and recorded to the 60i HDV tape
1080 interlaced, 60 fps–2:3 pull down is added and recorded to the 60i HDV tape
If the tapes play in the camera LCD, it probably is a setting that needs tweaking. This is only an assumption based on the information provided and what I am reading on the camera features and specifications page. Particularly the fact that this camera’s imager while at 1080 PROGRESSIVE, 60 frames per second at 4:2:2 color space INTERNALLY, RECORDS in HDV 1080i.
Here is the manual page I am referring to:
http://pro.sony.com/bbsccms/assets/files/micro/hdv/manuals/HVRV1U_OM.pdf
Look at NOTES section where it talks about i.LINK (better known as firewire) has to be disconnected BEFORE changing the VCR HDV/DV setting, otherwise the connected device, …may not be able to recognize the video signal from your camcorder.
Try to dissect the problem into manageable sections b simplifying your device path as you have started to do (i.e camera over firewire to FCP system) then introduce other devices like the deck once we get that working again.
Hope this information is useful to you and solves the “missing link”.

Rodney

This is very likely a FCP setup issue.
What deck are you using to playback the tapes?
The V1U can shoot at a variety of settings and FCP must match them. Based on Rodney’s input I might suggest trying an easy setup (keyboard shortcut= ctr-Q) of HDV 1080i60.
If that doesn’t work try HDV 1080p24 Firewire Basic.
Make sure to Quit FCP and disconnect the camera after changing settings and then relaunch and reconnect..
Good Luck!
