Final Cut Pro – Resetting Keyboard Shortcuts

Mac OS gets in the way of Final Cut’s keyboard shortcuts. Here’s how to fix it.

    Keyboard and Mouse Shortcuts

Arguably, two of the most powerful keyboard shortcuts inside Final Cut are F9 (perform an Insert edit) and F10 (perform an Overwrite edit). However, these same keyboard shortcuts are also used by the Mac operating system for displaying Expose windows.

Now, we COULD remap the keyboard shortcuts inside Final Cut, but it is faster, and easier, to change the shortcuts in the OS. Here’s how.

    1. Go to Blue Apple > Dashboard & Expose (OS 10.4) or Expose & Spaces (OX 10.5).

    2. In the lower left section of the window is a list of the keyboard shortcuts used by Expose. They default to F9 thru F12.

    3. While holding down the Control key, click each menu and reset it to the image you see here. (You can use any modifier key, however I’ve found Control has the fewest conflicts.)

What you’ve done is remap (change) the keyboard shortcuts so they no longer conflict with Final Cut Pro. To call up Dashboard, you now press Control+F12, rather than just F12 by itself.
